INTRODUCTION
For years people told me, “You should write a book!” After getting a strange look they’d add, “You’ve been through so much, you could really be an inspiration to others.”
When I finally sat down and took pen in hand, well, in my case it was more like paper into very old typewriter, I didn’t have a clue what I wanted to accomplish. All I knew at the time was that I was writing out of frustration. I had once again been rejected for a job, which wasn’t anything new. What really stung however, I was turned down for a volunteer job! And if that weren’t enough, it was with the Arthritis Society.
As I wrote, I didn’t realize what was happening, on the paper or to me. When the writing was finished I saw clearly the path my life had taken. I was amazed just how much I had overcome. I also discovered a few basic principles which had helped me along the way, and will help others with their own struggle.
I don’t claim to have all the answers, but I’d like to share some of the principles I’ve learned, most of them the hard way. One of the important, if not the most important, is having a good sense of humor. I don’t mean laughing at yourself first so when others laugh at you, you can tell yourself it doesn’t hurt – that’s a crock! I know – I’ve been there.
Equally important is having a positive attitude, about everything. If you look closely you’ll see there really is a sliver lining to every dark cloud. Some good always comes out of adversity.
Learning you can’t count on others for your happiness is another advantage. Whether you are in a relationship, or it’s your friends, no one can make you happy if you aren’t first happy with yourself.
Life has also taught me, no matter how bad things get, giving up isn’t an option. Often times giving up only makes things worse and you’ll never solve anything once you admit defeat.
Over the last few years I have worked on my story to present it in such a way that it will encourage, uplift and most of all inspire all who find themselves struggling now and then through life.
People sometimes have preconceived notions about those with disabilities – I want my story to reflect who I am, not what I appear to be on the outside.
It is my most sincere hope that by sharing my experiences, you will be spared some of the challenges I endured.
