August Memo 2005

Where to begin? It’s cloudy and cool as I sit here typing, but I guess that’s to be expected this time of year. I’m thankful we don’t live in the Southern United States, Katrina is wreaking havoc and the destruction is unbelievable. It’s unimaginable what those people are going through.

This month has been a mishmash of happenings. I’ve been learning how to optimize our Web site so more search engines find it, and I am here to tell you, this is no miner job! There is so much to learn I wonder if I’ll ever complete the task.

Then to my horror, one of my readers pointed out that there were a few typos in our new book, “Too Many Speed Bumps: A Journey of Healing.” After the many times we went through the book I was sure we’d found them all. It was not to be however. Most are little things like an n instead of an m. Things which are so easily missed by an eye that has read it a hundred times, well, okay maybe not a hundred times, but close.

As if I don’t have enough to do we are now going through the book yet again, however this time I’m fortunate to have my Li’ Sis, (you can learn more about her on page 280 of Speed Bumps) going through the book. Since this is her first time reading it, she is able to see things with an objective eye – what a blessing she has been.

So, those of you who now have the first edition hold a book that after my demise will be more valuable then the second edition we are currently working on. And since we’ve sold out of first edition, this couldn’t have come at a better time.

I was somewhat comforted by the fact that major publications can also be plagued by typos, publications I might add, that have professional editors. The book I’m reading about search engines is a case in point. I found the following sentence, “In some cases, the sites have own their own systems.” I won’t give you title of the book, just so I don’t embarrass them, but I tell you this, I didn’t feel quite as bad about our typos after seeing this! Ah, to err is to be human, or some such thing.

Moving on to a happier note, August 13th marked our Joshua’s sixth month since it sprouted from the old stump. I can’t believe how much he has grown in such a short time. His longest leaf is 17 inches! I’m scared to transplant him because the other one we potted isn’t doing so well. Although, it is throwing out roots despite not gaining any new leaves.

Maybe if we let this Joshua get establish he’ll do better when the time comes to give him a new home. For now, I think he’s quite content where he is, I know I am.

Driving is not as enjoyable as it once was, especially in summertime. It amazes me how some people are allowed on the roads, and the scariest part is, some of the new drivers. You know the ones who have the green “N” in the back window? While driving into town a few weeks ago we were behind one of these “New” drivers. They weren’t driving badly unless you count riding the brakes.

The scarey part was when it came time to pass her. As we drove by we noticed she was grooving to whenever noise was coming through her speakers with her left foot up on the dashboard! If that weren’t bad enough, her toe nails were painted a puke pale green. Eeeewwww.

I’m positive she did not drive in this manner while taking her road test. (If she had she would have failed simply on her choice of polish color) I’ve been driving for over thirty years and I would never think of driving in this position – even IF I could get my leg up there! Where are the police when you need them?

I suppose there is something to what they say about young people brains not maturing until they are at least twenty-five. I wonder if this young driver ever stops to think about what would happen in an accident.

This was a good reminder that we must be the conscientious ones while driving.

I haven’t had much time for reading this month, however I will be posting a couple of reviews I did some time back. Check out these reviews for the younger reader in your life.

That does it for this month, until next time, read much and be well! J
